De Montfort University graduate Naomi Dean has won a national furniture award for work done as part of her degree, bringing yet another accolade to the award-winning Faculty of Art and Design.

At the recent 'British Furniture Industry Awards' held in the NEC Hilton, Naomi Dean, from Cropedy, Oxfordshire, won 'Young Designer of the Year Award' sponsored by the Cabinet Maker magazine.

Naomi, 24, graduated De Montfort University's (DMU) Product & Furniture Design degree course last summer.

She won from a shortlist of 10 designers selected from universities throughout the UK. One other of the shortlisted designers was also a DMU graduate; Nathan Doyle.

Naomi's winning design, a rethinking of familiar wardrobe storage methods, is the same piece that won her the Ercol award for furniture at last summer's 'New Designers' graduate show in London as well as the British Contract Furnishing Association award for design in the International Marketplace.

With this latest honour from the British Furniture Industry Awards, Naomi has now won £500 and has been invited to do a three month work placement with Volume Furniture, and De Montfort University was awarded £500.

Michael Marsden, Programme Leader for Product & Furniture Design at DMU, said; "This latest award further endorses our reputation for excellence in product and furniture design and we are delighted for Naomi as this award can only enhance her career prospects".

Naomi said: "Winning this award has been amazing and since the show I have had five interviews which hopefully will lead to the start of a great career in design. I would like to thank the whole of the Design Department at DMU because without the support of everyone, from tutors to technicians, I couldn't have produced the work I have."
