POD Point from Infracharge is the exciting, next generation electric vehicle charging solution designed for local councils and private sector organisations looking to join the electric vehicle revolution with minimal effort and expense. The infrastructure currently available is unable to support long-distance travel by electric vehicles, so while it evolves to meet the long-term market requirements, Infracharge will focus on growing an extensive urban electric vehicle charging network. POD points can be installed by the side of the road, in car parks, outside supermarkets; in fact anywhere electric vehicles can have their charge boosted whilst owners go about their everyday business.

POD Points will rapidly become familiar ‘urban icons’ and along with the products, Infracharge support the backend systems, services, commercial models, and roadmaps to enable the fast and widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

LA Design was commissioned to develop the physical design of the POD Points along with the user experience elements. Each POD Points can charge two vehicles simultaneously, significantly reducing the effective installed cost per charging socket. In addition, POD Points have a built-in electricity feeder pillar which reduces the ground works required for installation. POD Points use industry-standard foundations and electrical connections making them extremely easy to install by existing contractors with minimal additional training. Working from a visual concept from Zero Collective, LA’s challenge was to create a ‘minimum envelope’ external solution which incorporated all the functionality necessary for each user to ‘swipe’ an RFID key, automatically release the charge cover and insert their charging plug whilst the POD Point communicates wirelessly with the POD Point network.

POD Points were officially launched at the LCV2009 show at Millbrook in September but initial orders were already in hand. CleanCharge have been appointed to distribute POD Points throughout Denmark. Erik Fairbairn CEO of Infracharge says:
