C-Tech Innovation’s Food waste Destruction Unit (FDU60) meets MoD standards for managing mixed food waste on board ship
The FDU60, designed by BDI member , eliminates the problems and health hazards associated with food waste storage - particularly in naval vessels where space is always at a premium.
The FDU60 has been developed for the Royal Navy to process mixed food waste on board ship and at other off-shore or remote locations, in response to operational constraints and rising legislation restricting the disposal of food waste at sea.
To speed up the design , and to meet tight timescales, C-Tech’s project team took a modular approach and developed each module in parallel with different team members taking the lead for each identified module. For modules with a high technical risk (unproven technology) two or more were developed and tested in parallel with real feedstock material to mitigate the risk of technical problems delaying the project.
The FDU60 was shortlisted for the Product of the Year 2012 in the British Engineering Excellence Awards, which aim to demonstrate and promote the quality of engineering design within the UK.
