The BikeBox: solving a bike-to-work problem - Brazilian style
15 January 2013

With summer temperatures reaching 43 degrees, the people of Rio de Janeiro are reluctant to ride their bikes to work even though they’ve over 270km of cycle paths. BDI member MJV Technology & Innovation, a Brazilian consulting company, has come up with a solution to overcome arriving at work all hot and sweaty.
The BikeBox is a special container that is equipped with showers, individual lockers and a suspended parking space for your bike. It was invented during a three-day sustainable innovation workshop conducted by MJV last year and was awarded the biggest prize money at the Brazilian Idea Festival in São Paulo.
It is aimed at companies interested in a sustainable policy or that simply want to provide a better lifestyle for its employees. Since the BikeBox is compact, measuring 6 x 2.5m², it can be installed in a parking lot or other small area. The container will be fuelled by solar energy and the showering water can be reused to wash the bicycles.
It's still in development phase, the cost of which for each bike BOX is estimated to be about £6,000
